Rhinoplasty swelling changes in stages. Early swelling is obvious; later swelling is often subtle and concentrated around the tip or thicker skin. This page explains common patterns without promising a fixed timeline.

Immediate Swelling
Swelling begins early after surgery and may involve the nose, cheeks and area around the eyes. Bruising varies by patient and procedure.
Week 1
The first week is usually the most visibly swollen stage. A splint may obscure the shape, and congestion can make the nose feel more swollen internally.
Weeks 2-4
Bruising and obvious swelling often improve, but the nose may still look broad, firm or undefined. Social readiness is not the same as final healing.
First 3 Months
Swelling often continues to settle gradually. Subtle asymmetries may shift as tissues soften. Tip definition can lag behind bridge refinement.
6 Months to 12 Months and Beyond
ASPS notes that nasal contour may take up to a year to fully refine. Some patients, especially those with thicker skin or revision surgery, may continue seeing subtle change beyond that point.
When to Contact the Surgeon
Patients should contact their surgical team if swelling is accompanied by concerning symptoms such as increasing pain, fever, bleeding, significant asymmetry, trauma, breathing difficulty or anything specifically flagged in their postoperative instructions.
